What is an IP Address ?

An IP address, or Internet Protocol address, is a unique numerical label assigned to each device connected to a computer network that uses the Internet Protocol for communication. It serves as an identifier for locating and communicating with devices on a network. IP addresses can be categorized into two main types: IPv4 and IPv6. IPv4 addresses consist of four sets of numbers separated by periods, while IPv6 addresses are longer and consist of hexadecimal numbers separated by colons. It serves two main purposes:

  • Identification: An IP address uniquely identifies a device on a network. Think of it like a postal address for devices connected to the internet. With an IP address, devices can send and receive data to and from each other over the network.
  • Routing: IP addresses are used by routers to route data packets between networks. When you send data from your device to another device on a different network, routers use IP addresses to determine the most efficient path for the data to reach its destination.
